Account Opening

Generally account openings take 2 to 3 days business days. At busier times of the year, please allow up to 5 business days. We will reach out to you by email if we have any questions regarding details in your application.

No, we do not ask for a minimum initial deposit to open an account.

Yes, regulators require that we have a signature on file before we open a customer account.

When you log in for the first time, you will be asked to:

  • create a new Trading Password (minimum 8 characters with a capital letter and a special symbol) 
  • create 5 security questions for future password reset 
  • register for free Real-time Quotes

Yes, we are a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF), which protects client accounts in the unlikely event of financial failure. 

Under CIPF coverage, funds are available to clients to make up for any shortfall in client assets that the broker should have maintained for the clients — up to a maximum of $1,000,000 for losses related to cash and securities balances in the client's general accounts or separate accounts as defined by CIPF policy.

You must be permanently residing in Canada in order to have an account at Qtrade Investor. Even if you are a Canadian living outside of Canada, we are unable to open an account for you.
