Exchange fees (ECN)
Electronic communication network (ECN) fees will not be passed on to our clients unless the fees result from repeated, high‑volume trades on the active side of the Canadian market. Our first course of action will always be to attempt to contact you to help you avoid trading activity that may result in excessive ECN fees.
Currency and foreign exchange
Transactions are settled in the currency in which the security trades (for example, U.S. securities settle in U.S. dollars). Depending on the type of account held, currency conversion may apply. Qtrade may earn revenue on foreign exchange transactions.
U.S. regulatory fees
When selling U.S. securities, a fee is charged consistent with the current assessed rate of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Order size and order handling
Orders may be executed in multiple fills depending on market conditions. Where applicable, fees associated with a trade (such as per‑contract options fees, regulatory fees, or representative‑assisted trading fees) are applied based on the execution of the order.
For option spread and combination orders, each leg of the order is treated as a separate execution for fee calculation purposes.
Multiple orders for the same security entered on the same trading day are treated as separate orders.
Mutual funds
A 1% fee (minimum $45) will be charged on the sale or switch of all mutual funds held for less than 90 days (applies to all funds except money market funds). Additional fees may also be charged by fund companies. All funds are subject to minimum purchase amounts as outlined in the fund's prospectus or $1,000, whichever is greater. Switch orders are only permitted within the same load type and family of funds.
Options assignments & exercises
Standard trading commissions do not apply to options trades. Options transactions are subject to per‑contract pricing as outlined above.
Options assignments are subject to a flat $30 assignment fee.
Options exercises are processed as investment‑representative assisted transactions and are subject to the applicable representative‑assisted trading fees.
